Lap-Tin's Useful Tips & Advice |
|
• |
Remember your audience - Just like a book,
your resume needs to be written with the target reader in mind, in this
case, a potential employer in a particular field or industry that you
are looking at. What traits, skills, experience, attributes,
personalities will they be looking for? Understanding what your
audience wants will already get you halfway there. |
|
• |
Research job advertisements - If you are
not sure what potential employers are looking for, go and look at a
couple of job advertisements for positions you are interested in. Pay
attention to the specific attributes they are looking for. Look at how
your background and resume reflects those attributes. |
|
• |
Hitting the Mark - Make sure that the first
page of your resume counts. Most employers will spend at most 30-60
seconds on your resume. If your resume does not convey a strong, clear
impression of who you are by the end of the first page, your chances
drop dramatically. |
|
• |
Keywords, Keywords, Keywords - A
significant number of recruitment agencies and employers use software
which automatically filters resumes based on certain keywords that the
employer is looking for. Making sure that you have important keywords
in your resume that are relevant to your desired role will help make
sure that your resume doesn't get filtered out. |
|
• |
Style vs Substance - Remember to tailor the
style of your resume to suit your industry. If you are in a technical
industry or role, then the style of your resume should be structured
and professional. If, instead, you work in a creative industry, then it
will be expected that your resume follows suit. |
|
• |
Responsibilities vs Achievements - A
responsibility is what is expected of you in a role. Achievements are
activities above and beyond normal expectations. Achievements are a
great way to sell your skills and expertise, but be careful not to
write up a responsibility as an achievement. Smart employers will see
right through it, and you risk losing credibility or confusing the
reader. |
|
• |
Ask for Help - If you are finding
that your resume does not seem to be getting the response you were
hoping for, don't be afraid to ask for help. Ask a friend or family
member to look over it for you. A second opinion will help to identify
any problems that you might have missed.
